River to the Sea – 2017

Watercolor, pen, pencil  – 15 x 20

This is a scene reconstructed from memory, from somewhere along the northern Californian coast.  As a way of getting into the ebb and flow, the peaceful commingling of sea and river, my pen strokes took the form of overlapping infinity signs interrupted only by a few rocks.  An insinuation of all the life it holds on down to the microbial.  The soft glancing light of a setting sun upon this swirling tidal flat reminds me of the iridescent bowl of an abalone shell.  I hoped to convey a sense of cycles and wholeness, an insinuation of all elements moving and molding around each other.
