Crossing the Bridge – 1988
Watercolor – 25 x 20
The veiled woman is both grounded and fluid, solid and liquid, earth and water. She carries a symbol of woman, the vase, which contains the possibility of new life. The stone bridge is a symbol for the essential masculine aspect of life. The Dragonfly could also be regarded as a masculine symbol — the persistence of the life force. The presence of the Dragonfly is also, quite literally, a sign of a living river, a river which is alive. The Larkspur spring from the vases on their slender stems and sway gracefully at the whim of the river breeze. They are a symbol for the ephemeralness of life. All the elements maintain their distinct qualities even as they reverberate with one another. Patterns are everywhere repeated with subtle variation. The natural world is ever changing and never boring.
