Kite People – 2007

Color pencil on black paper – 21 x 27

I like drawing forms that are humans plus something else.  It’s a way of expanding consciousness about ourselves and also a way of expressing emotion.  In this case, people as kites expressing the ‘volatile’ aspects of existence,  not so much the scientific definition of the word (easily evaporating), but as fleeting, transient, changeable.  At the mercy of something beyond themselves.  The wind could equal unseeable fate, and the kite people, themselves, free will. But then, there’s the question of strings.  What’s holding the strings?   That’s the Great Mystery.  An untethered kite might end up out of sight, or shredded in the top of a tree, or take a nose dive to Earth.
