Ode to Osmia lignaria (Blue Orchard Bee) – 2015
Watercolor, graphite, pen – 12 x 10
The Blue Orchard Bee, a wild bee native to North America, is an important pollinator of fruit trees. Orchard keepers are encouraging her to make her nurseries in their orchards by providing nesting tubes for her use, and the mud she needs to seal off each egg compartment. She is so busy visiting flowers and provisioning her nests with pollen, she has no time for stinging, and is not inclined to anyway.
Another in the Insect Portraits collection.
