Alders – 1976
Pen, watercolor – 22 x 28
What we have here is a first glance, and perhaps the commencement of a Love Chase. This drawing is a companion to Daphne – A Riparian Mask. The two figures might be Daphne and Apollo, or maybe any other potential couple. The small trees lacing the stream are alders, a tree sacred to the Druids, assigned to the month of March, the flood month when the snow is melting. The work was inspired by a creek where I lived in Vermont, The Wild Branch, which was more like a savage trickle, a creek difficult to walk along, much less run along because of the crisscrossing alders.
