Scarlet Skimmer – 1995
Watercolor, graphite – 14 x 14
With a sound like crinkling cellophane, the Scarlet Skimmer flies in figure eights over the surface of a still pond adding a note of drama to an otherwise quiet summer day. Because a dragonfly can tweak its four wings independently of one another, it can make swift switches of direction, even fly backwards. This one is hovering so you can view it more clearly.
Scarlet Skimmer, Libellula saturata, Family Libellulidae (Skimmers), Order Odonata
